Christmas Lights in San Diego 2026: Light Shows and Light Streets

San Diego’s biggest 2026 Christmas lights are ticketed walk-through trails in Encinitas and Del Mar, zoo and Safari Park lights included with admission, and free boat and neighborhood displays. Here are the confirmed dates, what each costs, and how to time your visit.

Where to see Christmas lights in San Diego in 2026

If you want one big lights night, choose between a ticketed light trail (Lightscape in Encinitas or Coastal Christmas in Del Mar), an animal park where the lights come with your day ticket (the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park), or a free option on the water or in a neighborhood. These are the light events with 2026 information on their organizers’ own pages:

  • Lightscape, San Diego Botanic Garden, Encinitas: November 20 to January 3, ticketed, mile-long trail.
  • Coastal Christmas Holiday Light Spectacular, Del Mar Fairgrounds: opens December 11, 2026, 4 to 9 p.m., ticketed, walk-through.
  • Wild Holidays, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Escondido: select evenings November 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027, included with admission.
  • Jungle Bells, San Diego Zoo: light experiences 5 to 8 p.m. on event dates, included with admission; check the zoo for 2026 dates.
  • San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: Sundays, December 13 and 20, 2026, from 5:30 p.m., free from shore.
  • Neighborhood light streets such as Christmas Card Lane in Rancho Peñasquitos: no tickets, nightly in December.

Ticketed light trails: Lightscape and Coastal Christmas

Lightscape at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas returns for its fifth season from November 20 to January 3. It is a mile-long illuminated trail through the garden. The garden’s 2026 page says general admission starts at $28 for adults and $18 for children, ages 2 and under are free, and prices vary by date. Parking is $15 per vehicle if you buy it ahead or $20 on site, and on-site parking is limited and subject to availability. Some paths are dirt and uneven, so wear real shoes and check the garden’s accessibility notes if you are bringing a wheelchair or stroller.

The Coastal Christmas Holiday Light Spectacular at the Del Mar Fairgrounds opens December 11, 2026. It is a walk-through park, open 4 to 9 p.m., and the Holiday Light Trail switches on at dusk, around 5:30 p.m. Alongside millions of lights there is synthetic-ice skating, a play area for kids, Santa photos, food vendors and a holiday market; the organizer notes that skating, the kids’ zone, food and drinks are bought separately from general admission. It runs rain or shine. Ticket prices are sold through the event’s ticketing partner and were not listed on its own page when we checked, so compare prices there before you choose a night.

Zoo, Safari Park and LEGOLAND: lights with your day ticket

The best value for many families is a light show that is already included with an admission ticket or membership. Spend the afternoon with the animals and stay for the lights.

At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, Wild Holidays runs on select evenings: November 28 and 29, December 18 to 23, and December 26, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with members invited to a preview on November 27. The park stays open until 8 p.m. on those dates, and most light displays run from 5 to 8 p.m. Highlights include a choreographed light show, a tunnel of lights on the Bridge of Lights, the Nairobi Lantern Walk and lit gardens. The park notes that wildlife viewing is limited during the evening event.

At the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, Jungle Bells adds holiday light treks and light experiences from 5 to 8 p.m., included with admission and membership. The zoo notes that Jungle Bells activities do not run on December 24. Its page did not list a full 2026 season when we checked, so confirm the dates before you buy.

LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad runs a holiday season it calls Christmas Bricktacular, with a 35-foot LEGO Christmas tree, holiday lights and fireworks on select nights, included with tickets and select passes. The park’s page lists select dates from late November into early January; check it for the exact 2026 days and the fireworks nights.

Free lights: December Nights and the Bay Parade of Lights

Balboa Park December Nights is the City of San Diego’s largest free holiday festival, with lights, music and food across the park. In 2026 it runs Friday, December 4, from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, December 5, from noon to 10 p.m. For the lights, arrive in the late afternoon and stay past sunset.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is the city’s floating light show. Decorated boats sail the bayfront to the pier at Chicano Park and then turn toward Coronado on Sundays, December 13 and 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m. There is no cost to watch. The 2026 theme is “Liberty Lights the Bay – Cheers to 250 Years.” Popular spots fill early, so pick one side of the bay, arrive well before the start, and bring a blanket and a warm layer.

Best neighborhood Christmas lights in San Diego

San Diego’s neighborhood light streets are run by residents, not event companies, so dates and hours are set street by street and can change each year. The best-documented one is Christmas Card Lane in Rancho Peñasquitos. Its organizers say it has been rated one of the best displays in San Diego since 1985, that most displays are up by the first or second week of December, and that you can visit daily from sundown to 10 p.m. The entrance is at Oviedo Street and Ellingham Street. Organizers ask visitors to plan for traffic on weekend nights, stay off lawns and displays, and take trash and pet waste home.

Other long-running light streets that local news roundups regularly feature include Christmas Circle in Chula Vista, Candy Cane Lane in Poway and Christmas Park in Clairemont. Their schedules are not posted on official pages for 2026, so treat them as “usually lit in December” and look for this year’s dates closer to the season.

Etiquette matters on residential streets: drive slowly with headlights on low, park legally and walk where you can, keep voices down later in the evening, and never step into a yard for a photo.

Is there a drive-through Christmas light show in San Diego in 2026?

As of late October 2026, we could not find a large, ticketed drive-through light show confirmed for San Diego County this year. The Del Mar Fairgrounds’ 2026 holiday event, Coastal Christmas, is a walk-through trail. If you would rather stay in the car, the closest thing is a slow drive past neighborhood light streets; just expect traffic on weekends and in the days before Christmas, and check back with venues in November in case a drive-through show is announced.

A medieval holiday after dark

Not every December evening out has to be a light show. In Lakeside, the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park runs on Saturdays, December 5 and 12, until 8 p.m., so the second half of the day happens after dark, with jousting knights, guild encampments, St. Nicholas and Father Christmas. It is a ticketed living-history event rather than a light display, and children 10 and under get in free.

Tips for seeing Christmas lights in San Diego

According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the sun sets around 4:42 p.m. in San Diego in early December and around 4:47 p.m. on December 21, with full darkness about half an hour later. Lights look best from about 5:15 p.m., which is also when crowds build.

  • Go early in the season or on a weeknight if you can; weekend nights and the days before Christmas draw the biggest crowds.
  • Buy timed tickets and parking ahead; both Lightscape and Del Mar sell online.
  • Dress for a cool night: NOAA’s normal December low is about 50°F at the coast and about 42°F inland at El Cajon.
  • Eat before you go or plan on event food, and bring a small flashlight for dark parking lots.
  • Confirm dates on each official site before you leave; holiday schedules change and many listings online still show 2025 dates.
