Free holiday festivals and parades

December Nights is the City of San Diego’s largest free holiday festival, filling Balboa Park with lights, music, attractions and food. In 2026 it runs Friday, December 4, from 4 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, December 5, from noon to 10 p.m. Admission is free, but food and shopping are not, so set a budget before you go. The city also warns of a fraudulent account asking vendors for payment; that does not affect visitors, but it is a reminder to rely on the official page for details.

The La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival marks its 70th year on Sunday, December 6, 2026. The festival runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the La Jolla Recreation Center and is free. The organizers’ page gives the parade start as 1 p.m. in one place and 1:30 p.m. in another, so check the latest time before you claim a curb. Organizers say the event has never been canceled in its history and runs rain or shine unless a severe storm arrives.

In Coronado, the Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting is listed for Friday, December 4, 2026, at Rotary Park on Orange Avenue. It is organized by the Coronado Chamber of Commerce with the city and Discover Coronado; look for the parade time on the chamber’s site.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights sails on Sundays, December 13 and 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m., and there is no cost to view it. Boats follow the bayfront to the pier at Chicano Park and then turn toward Coronado. Arrive early, because the best viewing spots fill up.

Free tree lightings in East County

East County’s hometown celebrations are smaller and easier to park for than the big downtown events, and they are a good way to meet a community.

Santee Holiday Lighting, Friday, November 20, 2026: a free evening at Santee Trolley Square, 9884 Mission Gorge Road, starting at 5:30 p.m. with the tree lit at 6:15 p.m. Expect live music, face painting, sledding, holiday photo spots and photos with Santa. Parking is limited, and the city suggests taking the Copper Line trolley. It runs rain or shine.

Lakeside Spirit of Christmas, Saturday, December 5, 2026: the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce’s 28th annual celebration opens at 3 p.m. with shopping, children’s activities and treats, followed at 5 p.m. by the community tree lighting and Santa’s arrival at the Olde Presbyterian Church. There are youth performances, craft booths, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a mailbox for letters to the North Pole. The chamber says everyone is invited; its page does not mention an admission charge.

Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon, Sunday, December 6, 2026: a free, community-wide event from 3 to 7 p.m. with a bubble snow area, live music, kids’ train rides, photos with Santa and an artisan market. The tree lighting at Prescott Promenade is at 6:30 p.m.

Free museum days in Balboa Park

Balboa Park’s Residents Free Days give free general admission to residents of the City and County of San Diego, and to active military personnel and their dependents, on set Tuesdays each month. Bring a photo ID that shows your address. Some museums offer free entry to permanent collections only, and special exhibitions or films are often excluded.

The rotation is: first Tuesday, Fleet Science Center and San Diego Natural History Museum; second Tuesday, San Diego Air & Space Museum, The Veterans Museum and Comic-Con Museum; third Tuesday, San Diego Museum of Art, Japanese Friendship Garden, Mingei International Museum and free behind-the-scenes tours at The Old Globe (registration required); fourth Tuesday, San Diego Automotive Museum and Museum of Us. In December, the park lists several venues as not taking part, including the Air & Space Museum (because of December Nights), Comic-Con Museum, Japanese Friendship Garden, Automotive Museum and Museum of Us. That leaves the first and third Tuesdays as the most useful in December; confirm with each museum before you go, since the park says dates can change without notice.

Free Christmas light streets

Neighborhood light displays cost nothing to see. Christmas Card Lane in Rancho Peñasquitos, entered at Oviedo Street and Ellingham Street, is lit daily from sundown to 10 p.m. once displays go up in early December, and its organizers ask visitors to expect weekend traffic and stay off lawns. Christmas Circle in Chula Vista, Candy Cane Lane in Poway and Christmas Park in Clairemont also appear in local roundups year after year; their 2026 dates are set by residents, so check closer to December.

Free outdoor things to do in December

San Diego’s beaches, bays and open-space parks are free to enjoy, and December is cool and uncrowded.

  • Mission Trails Regional Park: the San Diego Tourism Authority says everything at Mission Trails is free, with around 40 miles of trails. The visitor center is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Start hikes early, since the short days end around 5 p.m.
  • Beach walks and sunsets: with sunset around 4:42 to 4:53 p.m. through December (USNO), an early-evening walk on any city beach is a free holiday ritual.
  • Whale watching: the National Park Service says the gray whale season at Cabrillo National Monument runs from late December to mid-March. Cabrillo charges an entrance fee ($20 per vehicle, $10 per person on foot or bike, 15 and under free), and its 2026 fee-free days end in November.
  • Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: the state park lists free parking lots (up to four hours), and the visitor center and select museums open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Christmas Day.

Ticketed, but kids are free

Some holiday outings are worth knowing about because part of the family gets in free. At the Yuletide Medieval Festival in Lakeside (December 5 and 6 and 12 and 13, 2026), adult admission for ages 11 and up is $35, while children 10 and under get in free. It is a ticketed event, so it belongs on your list only if a medieval holiday day out appeals.

Tips for a free December in San Diego

  • Use transit where organizers suggest it, such as the trolley to Santee Trolley Square.
  • Pack your own water, snacks and a blanket; food at free festivals is sold by vendors.
  • The weekend of December 5 and 6 stacks December Nights, Lakeside, La Jolla and El Cajon; pick one per day.
  • Check each official page the week of the event, since times and weather plans can change.
