For the most going on, choose December 4-6. For a medieval festival plus the boat parade, choose December 11-13. For zoo lights and whale season, go later. The Yuletide Medieval Festival runs only on the first two weekends.
The short answer
Every December weekend in San Diego has something on, but each one has its own character. Here is how they compare, using only dates published on each organizer’s 2026 page.
- December 4-6: the fullest weekend. December Nights, the La Jolla Christmas Parade and the festival’s first weekend.
- December 11-13: the festival’s second and final weekend, the first Bay Parade of Lights sailing and the Santee Lakes Water Lantern Festival.
- December 18-20: Wild Holidays begins at the Safari Park, and the boat parade sails again on December 20. No medieval festival.
- Christmas week: holiday lights and skating continue, but some parks and museums close on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
December 4-6: the busiest weekend
If you want to pack the most into one trip, this is it. The City of San Diego’s free December Nights festival takes over Balboa Park on Friday, December 4 (4 to 10 pm) and Saturday, December 5 (noon to 10 pm). On Sunday, December 6, the La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival fills La Jolla village, with the festival running 1 to 5 pm at the La Jolla Recreation Center.
Inland, the Yuletide Medieval Festival opens its first weekend at El Monte County Park in Lakeside: Saturday 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm. With a big free event near the coast on each day, plan which one you’ll trade for a day in East County.
Also running: The Old Globe’s Grinch (through December 31) and Scrooge show (through December 27), Skating by the Sea at Hotel del Coronado, and daytime Santa photos at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on December 5 and 6.
December 11-13: festival plus boat parade
This is your last chance for the Yuletide Medieval Festival in 2026: Saturday, December 12 (10 am to 8 pm) and Sunday, December 13 (10 am to 6 pm). Spend a day in England in 1420 with knights in tournament, a battle pageant, the King’s Procession, guild encampments, St. Nicholas, Father Christmas and Krampus.
On Sunday, December 13, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights sails from 5:30 pm, free to watch from shore. In Santee, the Water Lantern Festival runs December 12 and 13 at Santee Lakes, 2 to 7 pm, with the lantern launch from 5 to 7 pm; the organizer sells tickets. The Safari Park lists Santa photos on December 12 and 13 as well.
A simple plan: festival on Saturday, boat parade on Sunday evening.
December 18-20: lights and the second boat parade
The festival is over by this weekend, but the evening light events ramp up. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Wild Holidays returns December 18 to 23, with the park open until 8 pm on those dates. The Bay Parade of Lights makes its second sailing on Sunday, December 20, at 5:30 pm. From December 18, Skating by the Sea is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
At the San Diego Zoo, Jungle Bells usually runs from mid-December into early January; its 2026 dates were not posted when we checked, so confirm on the zoo’s site.
Christmas week
Christmas week suits visitors who want lights, skating and a quieter, family-at-home feel. Wild Holidays continues December 26 through January 3, and the Hotel del rink stays open daily through January 3. The Old Globe’s Grinch plays through December 31.
Plan around closures. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park’s museums close on Christmas, Santee Lakes closes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and El Monte County Park has no vehicle access or restrooms on December 25. Late December is also the start of gray whale watching season at Cabrillo National Monument, which runs to mid-March.
Weather and daylight across December
The weather barely changes from week to week. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put San Diego’s average December high near 66°F and low near 50°F, with about 1.7 inches of rain for the month. Inland El Cajon, near Lakeside, averages about 68°F by day but about 42°F at night. Rain is possible, and the festival runs rain or shine, so pack a rain layer.
Daylight is short all month and nearly constant. The U.S. Naval Observatory puts San Diego’s sunset at about 4:42 pm on December 5, 4:43 pm on December 12, 4:46 pm on December 19 and 4:49 pm on December 26, with sunrise moving from about 6:36 am to 6:49 am. Whatever weekend you choose, plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and early afternoon.
Choose by what you care about
- A medieval festival, jousting or St. Nicholas: December 4-6 or 11-13 only.
- The most free events in one trip: December 4-6.
- Boat parade plus a festival day: December 11-13.
- Zoo and Safari Park light shows: December 18-20 or Christmas week.
- Whale watching from shore: Christmas week or later.
- A seated holiday dinner with entertainment: the St. Nicholas Feast, Saturdays at 6 pm or Sundays at noon on festival weekends (100 seats per day).
Questions
Which weekends does the Yuletide Medieval Festival run?
Only two: December 5-6 and December 12-13, 2026, at El Monte County Park in Lakeside. Saturdays run 10 am to 8 pm and Sundays 10 am to 6 pm. There is no festival on the December 18-20 weekend or Christmas week.
Is the weather better later in December?
Not noticeably. NOAA’s December normals are the same for the whole month, and sunset only moves from about 4:42 pm to 4:49 pm between early and late December. Choose your weekend by events, not weather.
Which weekend has the Bay Parade of Lights?
The 2026 parade sails on two Sundays, December 13 and December 20, starting at 5:30 pm. December 13 falls on the festival’s second weekend, so you can do both in one trip.
Which weekend is least crowded?
We have no attendance data to compare weekends, so we can’t say for sure. The first weekend has the most big free events, so if you want fewer competing crowds near the coast, a later weekend may feel easier. Book anything with limited capacity early whichever you pick.
