El Monte County Park has no camping, so stay nearby. The closest option we found is Lake Jennings campground in Lakeside. Santee Lakes has cabins, and El Cajon, Santee, Alpine and central San Diego are all within about 30 miles by road.
The short answer
El Monte County Park, home of the Yuletide Medieval Festival, is a day-use picnic park. San Diego County Parks lists its hours as 9:30 am to sunset and lists no campsites, so you will need to stay somewhere nearby. Distances below are road miles to 15805 El Monte Road, calculated with OpenStreetMap routing. Real drive times depend on traffic, so allow extra time.
- Closest, for campers and RVs: Lake Jennings campground, Lakeside, about 6 miles.
- Cabins or a big RV park: Santee Lakes, Santee, about 13 miles.
- Town base with restaurants: El Cajon (downtown is about 12 miles) or Santee.
- Adults-only resort: Viejas in Alpine, about 17 miles.
- City and coast: Mission Valley (about 25 miles) or downtown (about 26 miles).
Lakeside: camping at Lake Jennings
Lake Jennings campground, at 10108 Bass Road, is the closest place to stay that we could confirm on an official site. It is open year-round. The campground lists 35 full-hookup RV sites (water, electricity and sewer), 17 partial-hookup sites, 44 tent sites without hookups, and a larger tent-only Super Site for up to 12 people with a half-enclosed pavilion, picnic tables and fire rings.
Restrooms and hot showers are open 24 hours, the campground has free Wi-Fi, and firewood, ice and propane are sold at the entrance station. Reservations are made online through the Lake Jennings website, and the campground’s phone number is 619-390-1623. December nights are cold inland (NOAA’s normals put El Cajon’s average December low near 42°F), so bring a warm sleeping bag.
Santee: Santee Lakes cabins and RV sites
Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, about 13 miles from the festival, combines a large campground with something rare in the area: cabins on the water. The park has 300 full-hookup campsites, seven lakefront cabins and three floating cabins. Every cabin has heating and air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a TV, a shower bathroom, a kitchenette and a barbecue grill, and the floating cabins come with a private pedal boat. Pets are not allowed in the cabins.
Two December notes. The park closes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And on December 12 and 13, 2026, Santee Lakes hosts the Water Lantern Festival (2 to 7 pm), so expect a busy park that weekend.
El Cajon and Santee hotels
If you prefer a hotel, El Cajon and Santee are the closest towns with a range of lodging, and both put you roughly 9 to 13 miles from the park by road. They also make it easy to combine the festival with other East County stops. We could not open the official booking pages of individual hotels in these towns, so we are not naming them here; search a map for hotels near Santee or El Cajon and check each property’s own site for rates and policies.
Alpine: Viejas (adults only)
East of Lakeside, Viejas at 5000 Willows Road in Alpine has two hotels, Viejas Hotel and Willows Hotel, about 17 miles from El Monte County Park by road. Both are adults-only: Viejas says guests must be at least 21 to enter the casino, hotels and dining venues. That makes it an option for couples or groups of adults; families with children should look at El Cajon, Santee or the campgrounds instead.
Mission Valley and downtown San Diego
If the festival is one day of a longer San Diego trip, staying centrally may make more sense. Fashion Valley in Mission Valley is about 25 miles from the park by road, the Gaslamp Quarter about 26 miles and San Diego International Airport about 29 miles. You give up a short drive on festival day, but you stay close to Balboa Park, Old Town and the bay for the rest of your trip. If you plan to stay until the 8 pm Saturday close, remember that the drive back will be in the dark.
Booking tips for festival weekends
- Book early if you are staying for a Saturday evening. The festival runs until 8 pm on December 5 and 12, and the St. Nicholas Feast is at 6 pm, so a nearby bed saves a long drive in the dark.
- Sunday visitors can often skip the overnight: the festival closes at 6 pm and the feast is at noon.
- There is no cell coverage at the park. Save your ticket confirmation, parking details and directions back to your hotel or campsite before you arrive.
- Parking is a separate add-on ($10 General Shuttle & Parking or limited $35 Fairgrounds Premium Parking), even if you are staying close by.
- Bringing a dog? The festival welcomes pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet, but check your lodging’s pet rules; Santee Lakes cabins don’t allow pets.
- Pack for cold nights, especially if camping.
