San Diego’s holiday season is a good time to explore the city’s past, from Old Town’s adobes and the Whaley House to two of California’s missions, a tall ship launched in 1863, and the museums of Balboa Park. Most sites stay open through December but close on Christmas Day, so plan around it.
Where to find history in San Diego this holiday season
If your idea of a perfect December day involves old buildings, good stories and a museum shop, these are the places to start. Hours and closures below come from each site’s official page:
- Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Rancho-era and frontier San Diego, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The Whaley House Museum in Old Town: a self-guided house museum begun in 1856.
- Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá: California’s first mission, founded in 1769.
- Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside: a Franciscan mission and National Historic Landmark with a museum.
- The Maritime Museum of San Diego: historic ships including Star of India, launched in 1863.
- Balboa Park museums, including the San Diego History Center and the Museum of Us.
- Living history: costumed reenactors at a medieval Christmas festival in Lakeside.
Old Town San Diego and the Whaley House
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park presents Mexican California’s Rancho period and life on the American frontier, tracing San Diego’s shift from a Kumeyaay village to a Mexican pueblo to an American settlement. Five original adobe buildings are part of the park, and its museums include the First San Diego Courthouse. The visitor center and select museums are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the museums close on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and free parking lots allow up to four hours.
Also in Old Town, the Whaley House Museum tells the story of Thomas Whaley, who began building his home on May 6, 1856. Daytime visits are self-guided, with a short introduction every 15 minutes and no reservation needed. The house is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed on Christmas Day. Only service animals are allowed inside.
Seasonal programs change from year to year, so check the California State Parks page for Old Town and the Whaley House’s updates page for any 2026 holiday events before you go.
The missions: San Diego de Alcalá and San Luis Rey
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá calls itself California’s first mission and the Mother of the Missions. It was founded on July 16, 1769, by Saint Junípero Serra, a Franciscan priest, as the first in a chain of 21 missions, and moved to its present site in 1774. It remains an active parish, so check Mass times if you want a quiet visit, and note that the visitor center and gift shop close on Christmas Day.
In Oceanside, Old Mission San Luis Rey describes itself as a thriving Franciscan mission and a National Historic Landmark. Its Mission Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with adult admission of $8, seniors and youth 6 to 18 at $5, children 5 and under free, and active military and dependents free. The free King of the Missions app offers a self-guided tour of eight stops, all free except the museum, and there is a free picnic area. The museum, gift shop and coffee shop close on Christmas Day.
Visiting both missions in one holiday week, one in the city and one in North County, is a satisfying way to compare two chapters of the mission story.
Tall ships at the Maritime Museum
On the downtown waterfront, the Maritime Museum of San Diego centers on Star of India. She was launched in 1863 at Ramsey on the Isle of Man under her original name, Euterpe, five days before Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. She sailed to India, then spent about 25 years carrying emigrants, mainly to New Zealand, and completed 21 circumnavigations. She has never had auxiliary power and still sails with a volunteer crew.
Walking her decks on a cool December afternoon is a fine way to slow down between holiday errands. The museum’s other vessels and on-the-water tours make it easy to fill a few hours.
Balboa Park’s history museums
Balboa Park’s Explorer pass is the simplest way to see several museums in one trip. Of its 16 participating venues, history lovers will gravitate to the San Diego History Center, the Museum of Us, the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park, the San Diego Automotive Museum and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.
The Explorer Limited Pass covers one admission to up to four venues in a single day, the Parkwide Pass covers each of the 16 venues once within seven consecutive days, and the Annual Pass covers general admission for 365 days. Holiday hours vary by museum, so check each one before a visit near Christmas or New Year’s.
Living history: a medieval Christmas in Lakeside
For history you can talk to, the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park in Lakeside, on December 5 and 6 and December 12 and 13, 2026, is set in England in 1420 in the closing years of Henry V’s reign. Reenactor guild encampments offer historical demonstrations, guild members answer questions, and the festival reenacts the Battle of Meaux, Henry V’s last campaign, alongside a jousting tournament and the King’s Procession. St. Nicholas appears in a bishop’s mitre and red vestments, a reminder of how much older the saint is than Santa Claus.
Planning a history-themed holiday week
A little planning helps you see more and wait less:
- Avoid Christmas Day: Old Town’s museums, the Whaley House, Mission San Luis Rey’s museum and Mission San Diego’s visitor center all close.
- Pair nearby sites: Old Town State Historic Park and the Whaley House are in the same neighborhood and make an easy half day.
- Go early on weekends; Old Town’s free lots have a four-hour limit, and holiday weekends can be busy.
- Wear comfortable shoes for uneven historic floors, ship decks and dirt paths.
- Bring a notebook or a phone with storage for photos; many sites allow photography, but ask at the door.
