San Diego doesn’t have one giant European-style Christmas market. It has a spread of smaller ones: artist studios in Balboa Park, a weekly street market in Little Italy, a gallery show of small works in Hillcrest, and community holiday markets in East County. Here is where to shop handmade in December 2026.
San Diego holiday markets 2026 at a glance
If you want to shop handmade gifts and soak up some holiday atmosphere at the same time, these are the San Diego markets with confirmed details for December 2026. Dates and hours come from each organizer’s own page; confirm before you go, because schedules can change.

- Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park: daily, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed on Christmas Day.
- Little Italy Mercato: every Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and every Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Balboa Park: December Nights and Spanish Village
Balboa Park December Nights is the City of San Diego’s big free holiday festival, and it is the closest thing the city has to a large open-air Christmas market. In 2026 it runs Friday, December 4, from 4 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, December 5, from noon to 10 p.m. The city recruits both food and retail vendors through an application process, so expect gift booths alongside the food stands. The city also warns that vendor applications go only through its official December Nights channels and that it never asks for payment by Zelle or other peer-to-peer apps, which is worth knowing if you sell crafts yourself.
Saturday evening is the busiest time. If shopping is your main goal, Friday evening or Saturday afternoon gives you more room at the booths.
For a quieter, year-round version of the same idea, walk to Spanish Village Art Center in the same park. The center lists 36 studios and more than 200 local artists working in different mediums, and it is open every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Because the work is made on site, you can often meet the person who made the bowl, print or piece of jewelry you are buying, which makes for a better story under the tree.
Little Italy Mercato: a weekly market with holiday gifts
Little Italy Mercato is a farmers market first, but it is also one of the easiest places in the city to pick up edible and handmade gifts on any December weekend. The Saturday market runs every week from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and fills six city blocks of West Date Street, from west of Kettner Boulevard to Front Street. Alongside California farmers selling produce, eggs, meat, nuts and plants, local makers sell fish, olive oil, bread and sauces, and the organizers say selected local artisans and gift sellers take part too.
There is also a smaller Wednesday market, every week from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on three blocks from Kettner Boulevard to State Street, including Piazza della Famiglia. The organizers describe it as offering artisan foods, crafts and art by local makers. Both markets run year-round, rain or shine.
In December 2026 the Saturday market falls on December 5, 12, 19 and 26, and the Wednesday market on December 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. A bottle of local olive oil, a jar of sauce and a loaf of bread make a simple hostess gift for holiday dinners.
Hillcrest: the Holiday Art Market at The Studio Door
If you prefer original art to craft booths, The Studio Door gallery at 3867 Fourth Avenue holds an annual Holiday Art Market of small, affordably priced works. In 2026 it runs from November 13 to December 23. Expect paintings, photography, ceramics, sculpture and glass. Admission is free.
Two dates are worth circling. The opening reception is Saturday, November 14, from 6 to 9 p.m., and is a chance to browse on the first weekend. A last-minute shoppers event follows on Saturday, December 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. Outside those events, the gallery’s regular hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
East County: community holiday markets in Lakeside and El Cajon
East County’s holiday markets feel more like a small-town Christmas: local clubs, nonprofits and makers selling from booths, with a tree lighting at the end of the day. Both of these are free to attend and fall on the first weekend of December.
On Saturday, December 5, 2026, the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce holds its 28th annual Spirit of Christmas on Maine Avenue from 3 to 7:30 p.m. The chamber lists holiday shopping with local clubs and vendors, craft booths and kids’ activities, food and treats, a North Pole mailbox and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The community tree lighting and Santa’s arrival are at 5 p.m. at the Olde Presbyterian Church. Admission is free to everyone.
The next day, Sunday, December 6, the Downtown El Cajon Association hosts Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon from 3 to 7 p.m., including what it calls a festive artisan market of local vendors. The tree lighting is at 6:30 p.m. in Prescott Promenade.
The same two weekends also bring a different kind of marketplace to Lakeside’s El Monte County Park: the Yuletide Medieval Festival (December 5 and 6, and December 12 and 13, 2026) has an artisan marketplace with “shops from weapons to whimsy” inside its 1420-themed holiday fair, which is a paid, ticketed event. There is no cell coverage at the park, so bring cash; there are ATMs on site.
Markets elsewhere in the county
North County towns such as Carlsbad, Del Mar and Escondido have their own seasonal pop-up markets, but we could not find 2026 dates posted on official pages as of late October. The best places to check are each city’s events calendar and the village or downtown association’s website. Be wary of event-listing sites that still show last year’s dates, since many simply roll them forward.
How to shop San Diego’s holiday markets
A few habits make a market trip easier and more fun:
- Bring cash as well as cards. Small makers sometimes rely on phone card readers, and cell signal can be weak in parks and crowds.
- Bring a sturdy tote or two. Ceramics and glass travel better wrapped in a scarf than in a paper bag.
- Go early for the best selection, or late on the final day for the calmest browsing.
- Ask makers whether they take custom orders; some can finish a personalized piece before Christmas.
- Plan parking. December Nights and downtown events draw big crowds, so consider transit or a rideshare.
- Check the date and hours on the official site the week you go.
