Holiday in the Village: Saturday, December 12

If you are searching for Christmas in the Village in La Mesa, this is the event you want: the La Mesa Village Association’s downtown December celebration is called Holiday in the Village. The association lists its 11th annual event for Saturday, December 12, 2026, from noon to 9 pm on La Mesa Blvd. between Spring Street and 4th Street, in the heart of downtown La Mesa. Admission is free.

The association’s 2026 page lists these features:

  • Holiday shopping from more than 100 vendors selling art, home decor, handcrafted items, jewelry, clothing and food, plus the Village’s own shops and restaurants.
  • An ice-skating rink, mini golf and a Winter Wonderland area.
  • A Santa Nook, a Mrs. Claus Reading Nook and a holiday 360 photo op.
  • A Kids Shopping Program: children 10 and younger can shop at 50-plus vendors offering items for $5 or less, from noon to 9 pm.
  • An Elf Scavenger Hunt from 12:15 to 7:45 pm: find 12 elves hidden in storefronts along La Mesa Blvd. and enter to win one. Instructions are at the Information Booth.

Getting to Holiday in the Village

The easiest way in is the trolley. The MTS Orange Line’s La Mesa Blvd. station is at 8248 La Mesa Blvd., within the Village, so you can skip the hunt for parking on the busiest day of the downtown year. If you drive, the Date Ave. lot across from City Hall is the free lot the association points Friday market shoppers to; arrive early, because the event draws holiday shoppers from across the region.

Dress for a cool evening. The sun sets around 4:40 pm in early December, and the event runs until 9 pm.

Christmas on Mt. Helix: Saturday, December 5

The Mt. Helix Park Foundation hosts Christmas on Mt. Helix on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 3 to 8 pm, and it is free to the public. The hilltop park becomes a Christmas market of local vendors selling crafts, food and drinks, with photos with Santa, hot chocolate, kids’ crafts and a caroling performance later in the evening.

Do not try to drive to the top. General public parking is at the Grossmont High School lower parking lot, 1100 Murray Drive, El Cajon, and continuous shuttles run up to the park. The fire station lot at 10105 Vivera Drive is for foundation members only. Mount Helix Park has a La Mesa address but sits in the unincorporated Mount Helix area of San Diego County.

Holiday Light Stroll: Wednesday, December 16

The City of La Mesa’s calendar lists a free Holiday Light Stroll on Wednesday, December 16, 2026, at La Mesita Park, 8855 Dallas Street. Meet at 5 pm for cider, cookies and check-in; the stroll begins at 5:30 pm. Dogs are welcome on a leash. It is a low-key, neighborly way to see holiday lights midweek.

Storefront contest, library programs and the Friday market

All season, downtown businesses decorate their windows for the La Mesa Village Association’s Holiday Storefront Decorating Contest. Stroll the Village, pick a favorite and vote online between November 30 and December 13, 2026; look for voting flyers at participating businesses.

The San Diego County Library’s La Mesa branch, at 8074 Allison Avenue, hosts a Sustainable Saturday Clothing and Toy Swap on Saturday, December 5, from 10 am to 1 pm, presented with the city. Bring up to one grocery bag of gently used clothes, accessories or toys and take home something new to you. Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. The branch does not list a holiday storytime for December as of late October, so check the library’s events calendar for additions; the branch phone is (619) 469-2151.

The La Mesa Village Farmers Market keeps running on Fridays from 3 to 7 pm, a good place for holiday treats and handmade gifts. It is closed Christmas Day.

Nearby East County Christmas events

Neighboring East County towns have their own dated events, all a short drive from La Mesa:

  • Lakeside: the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce’s 28th annual Spirit of Christmas is Saturday, December 5, 2026, on Maine Avenue. Shopping, children’s activities and treats start at 3 pm, and the Community Tree Lighting and Santa’s arrival are at 5 pm.
  • El Cajon: the Downtown El Cajon Association’s free Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon is Sunday, December 6, 2026, 3 to 7 pm, with a microbubble Snow Zone, kids’ train rides, photos with Santa, an artisan market and a tree lighting at 6:30 pm in Prescott Promenade.
  • Rancho San Diego: the county library’s Rancho San Diego branch holds Carols, Crafts and Cookies on Tuesday, December 15, at 5:30 pm, with carolers and a kids’ winter craft.
  • Lakeside: the Yuletide Medieval Festival recreates England in 1420 at El Monte County Park, about 16 road miles from La Mesa Village, with jousting, a battle pageant, St. Nicholas and Krampus. Children 10 and under get in free.

Planning around Saturday, December 5

December 5 is one of the busiest days on the East County holiday calendar, with Christmas on Mt. Helix, Lakeside’s Spirit of Christmas and the La Mesa Library toy swap all on the same day. Pick one evening event and build the day around it: the Mt. Helix market and the Lakeside tree lighting overlap, so you are unlikely to do both well. Sunday, December 6, is quieter, with El Cajon’s tree lighting at 6:30 pm, and Saturday, December 12, belongs to Holiday in the Village.
