For kids, Santee Lakes is the headline: seven playgrounds and a fishing pond just for children. Add El Cajon’s Water Conservation Garden and two free holiday lightings in November and December 2026, and you have a full season of family outings.
Quick picks for families
If you have one free day with kids in El Cajon or Santee, start here:
- Santee Lakes: seven playgrounds and a kids’ fishing pond in one park.
- The Water Conservation Garden in El Cajon: a garden to explore, with reduced child admission.
- Santee Holiday Lighting, Friday, November 20, 2026: free, with sledding and Santa.
- Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon, Sunday, December 6, 2026: free, with a Snow Zone and train rides.
- A day of jousting and knights at a living-history festival in neighboring Lakeside on early December weekends.
Santee Lakes: seven playgrounds in one park
Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, at 9310 Fanita Parkway, is the easiest win for families in the area. The park says it has seven playgrounds:
- The Boulder Adventure Course, on an island in Lake 5 reached by a bridge.
- The Mega Tower at Lake 1.
- A tot lot near the General Store.
- A playground at the north end of Lake 5.
- A campground playground across from the Clubhouse.
- The Kiwanis Club playground for children with disabilities, between Lakes 3 and 4, with a shade structure.
- The sprayground at Lake 1, for children 13 and under.
Splash pads in winter: plan around the season
The Santee Lakes sprayground is seasonal. The park lists it as weekends only in March and October, daily from April through September, and closed from November through February. It also closes in bad weather, and a wristband costs $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends.
So for a November or December visit, skip the swimsuits and plan on the dry playgrounds, the fishing pond and the lakeside paths instead. If your kids are set on water play, save the sprayground for spring.
Fishing with kids at Santee Lakes
Santee Lakes is a good place for a first fish. The park runs a Kid’s Fishing Pond for children 12 and under, open daily with a park fishing permit from the General Store, the Gatehouse or the Santee Lakes app. No state fishing license is required at the lakes.
Winter is trout season. The park opened its 2026-2027 trout season on November 7-8, 2026, and its schedule lists trout stocking days that include the Kid’s Pond on December 4 and December 30, 2026. Stocked lakes are closed to fishing on stocking days, so plan to go after. The park also publishes a weekly fish report and a beginner’s guide to tackle and bait, and dates can change, so check before you go.
The Water Conservation Garden
On the Cuyamaca College campus in El Cajon, the Water Conservation Garden is a nonprofit demonstration garden with themed exhibits, wildlife and garden paths, and it runs youth education programs and school field trips. It makes a calm change of pace from the playground.
Admission is $11 for adults, $7 for children 3 to 17 and free for children 2 and under. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday; the garden is closed Sundays and Mondays and on holidays listed on its events calendar. Parking is free. Check the garden’s calendar for family events and its Free Day Friday dates.
Holiday events for families in 2026
Both cities light up for the season with free events built for kids:
- Santee Holiday Lighting: Friday, November 20, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. at Santee Trolley Square, 9884 Mission Gorge Road. The City of Santee lists live music, face painting, sledding, photos with Santa and holiday photo spots, with the tree lit at 6:15 p.m. It goes ahead rain or shine. Parking nearby is limited, and the city suggests riding the trolley’s Copper Line.
- Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon: Sunday, December 6, 2026, 3 to 7 p.m. at Prescott Promenade. The Downtown El Cajon Association lists a microbubble Snow Zone, kids’ train rides, photos with Santa, live music and an artisan market, with Mayor Bill Wells leading a tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. It is free; check the association’s page for any changes.
- El Cajon’s Mother Goose Parade, a pre-Christmas tradition since 1947, has not been held since 2020, and FOX 5 has reported a community push to revive it by Thanksgiving 2026. We could not find an official 2026 date, so watch local news before you plan around it.
A sample family weekend
Here is one way to string these together on a December weekend, using only the published dates and hours:
- Saturday morning: the Water Conservation Garden, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays, followed by lunch in El Cajon.
- Saturday afternoon: Santee Lakes for the Boulder Adventure Course and the Mega Tower, then a turn at the Kid’s Fishing Pond if you bought a permit.
- Sunday, December 6: Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon from 3 p.m., with the Snow Zone and train rides while it is still light, Santa photos, and the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m.
- If your kids still have energy, hold Sunday morning and early afternoon for an outdoor activity close to home so they are fresh for the evening.
A medieval day out in nearby Lakeside
Just east of both cities, the Yuletide Medieval Festival fills El Monte County Park in Lakeside on December 5-6 and 12-13, 2026, with jousting, a daily battle pageant, St. Nicholas and Father Christmas, and children’s areas throughout. Kids are not supervised by the festival, so plan to stay with yours. Adult admission (11 and older) is $35, and children 10 and under get in free. There is no cell coverage at the park, so screenshot your tickets before you leave home.
Tips for family outings in El Cajon and Santee this winter
- Dress in layers: both tree lightings happen after dark.
- For Santee’s lighting, parking nearby is limited, so consider the trolley, as the city recommends.
- Fishing on a stocking day? Stocked lakes are closed to fishing that day, so check the Santee Lakes schedule first.
- The Water Conservation Garden is closed Sundays and Mondays, so plan garden visits for Tuesday through Saturday.
- Pack snacks and water; plan a picnic at Santee Lakes between playgrounds.
Questions
Is the Santee Lakes splash pad open in winter?
No. Santee Lakes lists its sprayground as closed from November through February. It reopens on weekends in March and runs daily from April through September. The park’s seven playgrounds, including the dry play areas, are a good winter alternative.
Do kids need a fishing license at Santee Lakes?
No state fishing license is required at Santee Lakes, but anglers need a park fishing permit. Children 12 and under can fish the Kid’s Fishing Pond with a permit from the General Store, the Gatehouse or the park’s app.
When is the Santee tree lighting in 2026?
The City of Santee’s free Holiday Lighting is Friday, November 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Santee Trolley Square, with the tree lit at 6:15 p.m. Parking is limited, so the city suggests the trolley’s Copper Line.
Is there a Mother Goose Parade in 2026?
We could not find an official 2026 date. The El Cajon parade has not been held since 2020, and local reporting describes a community effort to revive it. Check local news for any announcement.
