Where to See Santa in San Diego in 2026

The surest dated Santa visits in San Diego for 2026 are free East County community nights: Santee on November 20, Lakeside on December 5 and El Cajon on December 6. The North Pole Limited train in Campo and the San Diego Zoo also host Santa, while most malls had not posted 2026 dates by late October.

Where to see Santa in San Diego: the 2026 short list

If you want a confirmed date on the calendar, start with East County. Three community celebrations have published their 2026 dates, and all three include Santa; two say outright that they are free. Add a ride on a Santa train or an evening at the zoo, and watch the malls for their schedules, which may be posted closer to the season.

Here is what organizers had confirmed by late October 2026:

  • Santee Holiday Lighting: Friday, November 20, 2026, from 5:30 pm, Santee Trolley Square. Free, with photos with Santa.
  • Lakeside Spirit of Christmas: Saturday, December 5, 2026. Open to the public from 3 pm; tree lighting and Santa’s arrival at 5 pm. Photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
  • Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon: Sunday, December 6, 2026, 3 to 7 pm. Free, with pictures with Santa.
  • North Pole Limited, Campo: weekends from November 27 to December 20, 2026. Ticketed; Santa and Mrs. Claus board the train.
  • San Diego Zoo, Jungle Bells: photo visits with Santa at Santa’s Factory; check the zoo’s page for 2026 dates.
  • Shopping malls: 2026 Santa sets had not been announced on the official pages we checked; see below.

Community nights with Santa in East County

Santee kicks off the season early. The City of Santee’s Holiday Lighting is a free evening on Friday, November 20, 2026, at Santee Trolley Square, 9884 Mission Gorge Road. Festivities start at 5:30 pm and the tree lights up at 6:15 pm. The city lists live music, face painting, sledding and photos with Santa, who will be set up in the area between Target and Miniso. Parking is limited, so the city suggests taking the trolley, and the event goes ahead rain or shine.

Lakeside’s Spirit of Christmas, run by the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce, is on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Shopping, children’s activities and treats open to the public at 3 pm. At 5 pm the community tree lighting takes place at the Olde Presbyterian Church, followed by Santa’s arrival. The chamber also lists photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, local youth performances, craft booths and a Mailbox for the North Pole, which is a nice way for kids to send their wish lists. The chamber’s page does not list photo times or prices, so check closer to the date.

The next afternoon, Sunday, December 6, 2026, Downtown El Cajon hosts Holiday Lights from 3 to 7 pm. The organizers describe it as a free, community-wide event with a microbubble Snow Zone, live music, kids’ train rides, an artisan market and pictures with Santa. The tree lighting in Prescott Promenade is at 6:30 pm.

Because Lakeside and El Cajon fall on back-to-back days, families in East County can easily see Santa twice on the first weekend of December.

Ride a train to meet Santa: the North Pole Limited

The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum runs the North Pole Limited from the Campo Depot at 750 Depot Street in Campo. In 2026 trains leave Fridays and Saturdays from November 27 to December 19 at 5 pm and 7 pm, and Sundays from November 29 to December 20 at 3 pm and 5 pm.

The ride lasts about 90 minutes. Elves lead a sing-along and stories and hand out hot chocolate and cookies, the train picks up Santa and Mrs. Claus at the North Pole, and the pair visit every passenger on the way back to the depot. The museum lists Classic Coach fares from $30 for adults and $15 for children 1 to 17, with higher-priced Business and First Class options, and notes that prices rise closer to Christmas.

The museum advises buying tickets in advance because the best seats sell out quickly, and arriving at least 30 minutes early to collect them. Online sales close 30 minutes before departure. Dogs are not allowed during the North Pole Limited.

Santa at the San Diego Zoo

During Jungle Bells, the San Diego Zoo opens Santa’s Factory at the Price Education Center in Lost Forest, where guests can visit Santa and have their photo taken. The zoo says Jungle Bells activities are included with admission tickets and memberships, excluding December 24. Santa’s Factory hours vary by date, and the zoo’s page did not clearly show 2026 dates when we checked, so confirm before you go and ask whether photo prints cost extra.

Santa photos at San Diego malls in 2026

Malls are the classic place for Santa photos, but most had not published 2026 details by late October. The official events pages we checked for Westfield UTC, Fashion Valley and Grossmont Center in La Mesa showed no 2026 Santa listing yet.

Two other malls have hosted Santa in recent seasons. In 2025, Mission Valley Mall held a free Sensory Santa morning on December 7 at its Santa Cabin, with quieter music for children with sensory sensitivities, and Parkway Plaza in El Cajon held a free tree lighting with Santa’s arrival on November 21. Neither had announced 2026 plans in the listings we found, so treat those as a guide to what to look for rather than this year’s schedule.

When the 2026 sets open, look for these details on each mall’s own page:

  • Online reservations, which let you skip the line and pick a time when your child is rested.
  • Sensory-friendly sessions with quieter music and shorter waits, if offered.
  • Pet photo nights, if you want the dog in the family card.
  • Photo package prices, and whether you can take your own pictures.
  • Santa’s break times and when the line closes each day.

Father Christmas and St. Nicholas at a medieval festival

For a different kind of Santa visit, the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park in Lakeside brings out three holiday figures: St. Nicholas in a bishop’s mitre and red vestments, Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, in red velvet and fur, and Krampus. It runs Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, and December 12 and 13, 2026, alongside jousting, a battle pageant and reenactor encampments.

Children 10 and under get in free, and leashed dogs are welcome. Appearance times are not published in advance, so ask at Guest Services by the entrance, and note there is no cell signal at the park. Lakeside’s Spirit of Christmas is the same Saturday as the festival’s opening day, so the two can share a day in Lakeside.

Tips for a smooth Santa visit

  • Book early when reservations are offered; popular times and trains fill first.
  • Go early in the day or early in the season for shorter lines, and avoid nap time.
  • At community events, arrive before the tree lighting so you’re settled in when Santa arrives.
  • Use public transit where suggested. Santee recommends the trolley because parking is limited.
  • Bring a jacket for evening events, which mostly run after sunset.
  • Check pet rules before bringing the dog. The North Pole Limited does not allow dogs.
  • Have a plan for a shy child: watch Santa from a distance first, and don’t force a lap photo.
