Holidays Close to Home in East County, or Head Downtown?

Downtown and the bay have San Diego’s biggest free holiday events, December Nights and the Bay Parade of Lights, and they’re worth the trip if you plan for crowds and parking. Closer to home, El Cajon, Santee and Lakeside offer smaller events with an easier drive, and the two can share one December.

The short answer

If you want the big, citywide moments, go downtown or to the bay at least once: December Nights and the Parade of Lights are free and festive. If you want a shorter drive, easier parking and a calmer evening, East County has its own December calendar. Many families do one of each. Here’s how they compare for someone starting in El Cajon, Santee or Lakeside.

Heading downtown: December Nights in Balboa Park

December Nights is the City of San Diego’s largest free holiday festival. In 2026 it runs Friday, December 4, from 4 to 10 pm, and Saturday, December 5, from noon to 10 pm, with food, community performers on multiple stages and holiday lights through the park. The city says it draws more than 350,000 people over two days.

That size is the appeal, and also the thing to plan around. The city’s Getting There pages cover parking, shuttles and transit; read them before you leave and expect to walk. From East County, the trolley is an option: MTS’s Green Line runs from El Cajon Transit Center toward downtown, and Copper Line trains connect Santee to El Cajon every 15 minutes most of the day.

Heading to the bay: the Parade of Lights

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights sails on Sunday, December 13, and Sunday, December 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 pm. Decorated boats proceed along the bayfront and turn toward Coronado, and watching from shore is free. The organizers advise arriving early because the top viewing spots get crowded.

From El Cajon or Santee it’s an evening drive to the coast and back, and bayfront parking on parade nights takes patience. Bundle up; it’s cooler by the water after dark.

Staying close: East County’s holiday options

Closer to home, the calendar is smaller but easier to reach. Downtown El Cajon’s Holiday Lights, on Sunday, December 6, 2026, from 3 to 7 pm at Prescott Promenade, is free and includes live music, kids’ train rides, photos with Santa, an artisan market and a 6:30 pm tree lighting. Santee Lakes and Lake Jennings make easy daytime outings in between.

In Lakeside, the Yuletide Medieval Festival runs at El Monte County Park on December 5-6 and 12-13, 2026: 10 am to 8 pm on Saturdays and 10 am to 6 pm on Sundays. It’s a different kind of holiday outing, set in England in 1420, with jousting, a battle pageant, reenactor encampments, St. Nicholas, Father Christmas and Krampus, and an artisan marketplace. Unlike the free downtown events, it’s ticketed: adult admission (11 and older) is $35, military or 65+ is $30, and parking is a $10 shuttle add-on or $35 premium parking.

Side by side

  • Drive: downtown and the bay mean a freeway trip west and back; El Cajon’s Holiday Lights and the Lakeside festival are a short local drive for most Santee and El Cajon residents.
  • Parking: December Nights’ official site has a Getting There section on parking, shuttles and transit; the Parade asks you to arrive early; the festival sells parking as a $10 shuttle or $35 premium add-on with your ticket.
  • Crowds: December Nights draws more than 350,000 people over two days; East County events are smaller.
  • Cost: December Nights, the Parade of Lights and El Cajon’s Holiday Lights are free to attend (food and parking extra); the festival is a paid, all-day ticket.
  • Best for: big-city atmosphere and museums nearby (Balboa Park); boats and bay lights (Parade); a quick local tree lighting (El Cajon); a full themed day with shows, history and a feast (Lakeside).

Fitting both into one December

The 2026 dates line up well if you plan ahead. Friday, December 4, is December Nights only, since the festival opens on Saturday. Saturday, December 5, has both December Nights and the festival’s first Saturday, so choose one. Sunday, December 6, has the festival until 6 pm and El Cajon’s Holiday Lights from 3 to 7 pm.

The second weekend is the tighter one: the Parade of Lights’ first night, Sunday, December 13, starts at 5:30 pm, while the festival’s last day ends at 6 pm in Lakeside, so you can’t easily do both that day. Saturday, December 12 at the festival plus the parade on Sunday, December 20 avoids the clash.

  • Fri Dec 4: December Nights (4-10 pm).
  • Sat Dec 5: December Nights or the festival (10 am-8 pm).
  • Sun Dec 6: festival (10 am-6 pm) and/or El Cajon Holiday Lights (3-7 pm).
  • Sat Dec 12: festival (10 am-8 pm).
  • Sun Dec 13: festival (10 am-6 pm) or Parade of Lights (5:30 pm).
  • Sun Dec 20: Parade of Lights (5:30 pm).

Tips whichever you choose

  • Check each event’s official site the week of; times can change.
  • December evenings get cold, so dress in layers for any of them.
  • For the festival, bring cash and save tickets offline: there is no cell coverage at El Monte County Park.
  • Plan on a drive home in the dark after a festival Saturday: it runs to 8 pm, well after the roughly 4:40 pm sunset.
