A December Weekend in East County: Santee, Lakeside and El Cajon

Spend Saturday morning at Santee Lakes and the afternoon and evening at the Yuletide Medieval Festival in Lakeside, then give Sunday to a sunrise hike or Lake Jennings and an evening in downtown El Cajon. On December 6, 2026, that evening can include El Cajon’s free Holiday Lights.

The weekend at a glance

If you live in Santee or El Cajon, you don’t need to cross the county for a full holiday weekend. Three neighboring communities give you a lake morning, a medieval festival that runs after dark, a sunrise hike and a downtown tree lighting. This plan is built around the first festival weekend, Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6, 2026, because that Sunday is also downtown El Cajon’s Holiday Lights. A variation for December 12-13 follows.

  • Saturday morning: Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, Santee.
  • Saturday midday to 8 pm: the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park, Lakeside, including the after-dark hours and the optional 6 pm St. Nicholas Feast.
  • Sunday sunrise: Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails Regional Park, or a gentler morning at Lake Jennings in Lakeside.
  • Sunday afternoon and evening: downtown El Cajon, with Holiday Lights from 3 to 7 pm on December 6.

Saturday morning: Santee Lakes

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, at 9310 Fanita Parkway, is a 190-acre park owned and operated by Padre Dam Municipal Water District, with seven recycled-water lakes stocked with sport fish year-round, walking trails, playgrounds and around 230 recorded bird species. In winter the preserve lists hours of 6 am to 5 pm Friday through Sunday, and pedal boats rent from 9 am to 4 pm daily. Weekend parking is $7 per vehicle (special-event and peak-holiday days are $10). The sprayground is closed from November through February.

Give it an hour or two: a loop on foot, some birding, or a pedal boat if the morning is calm. Leave by late morning so you have time to drive to Lakeside, park and get in while the day is still bright.

Saturday afternoon into evening: the festival in Lakeside

The Yuletide Medieval Festival is held on the grass at El Monte County Park, 15805 El Monte Road, Lakeside, and is set in England in 1420, near the end of Henry V’s reign. Expect knights in tournament, a battle pageant by the guilds reenacting the Battle of Meaux, the King’s Procession, reenactor encampments with demonstrations, minstrels, jesters and storytellers, an artisan marketplace, and St. Nicholas, Father Christmas and Krampus. The daily show schedule isn’t published, so check what’s on when you arrive.

Arriving in the early afternoon still gives you several hours of daylight. Sunset in Santee is about 4:41 pm on December 5, and on Saturdays the festival stays open until 8 pm, so the last stretch happens after dark. If you want a sit-down dinner on site, the St. Nicholas Feast is served Saturdays at 6 pm: five courses with ale, wine or a festive drink for under-21s, with King Henry V and St. Nicholas presiding. Feast tickets are $85, or $110 for General Admission with the Feast; seats are limited.

Two practical notes: there is no cell coverage at the park, so screenshot or print your ticket confirmation before you leave Santee Lakes, and bring cash (ATMs are on site, but vendors may not be able to take cards if the festival Wi-Fi goes down). Parking is an add-on: $10 General Shuttle & Parking or $35 Fairgrounds Premium Parking, which is limited.

Sunday morning: a sunrise hike or Lake Jennings

Sunrise is about 6:37 am on December 6. For a view, Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails Regional Park rises to 1,591 feet, the highest point in the park and in the City of San Diego. It’s a popular climb, so check Mission Trails for trailheads and conditions before you go, start in the dark with a headlamp if you want the sunrise from the top, and dress for a cold start: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for El Cajon put early-December lows around 42°F.

For something gentler, head back to Lakeside for Lake Jennings. Day use and shore fishing run 8 am to 5 pm daily, and the bait shop, fishing and boating open at 6 am on Sundays. Trout season makes it a relaxed winter morning even if you don’t fish.

Sunday afternoon and evening: downtown El Cajon

On Sunday, December 6, 2026, the Downtown El Cajon Association hosts Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon at Prescott Promenade, 200 East Main Street, from 3 to 7 pm. It is free and for all ages, with a microbubble Snow Zone, live music, kids’ train rides, photos with Santa and an artisan market, and it ends with a tree lighting at 6:30 pm. The organizers note that times can change, so check their site that week.

Arrive in the late afternoon, wander the market, have an early dinner at one of the restaurants downtown, and be back at the promenade for the lighting. It’s a short drive home for most of Santee and El Cajon.

If you choose December 12-13 instead

The festival’s second weekend follows the same hours: Saturday, December 12, 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday, December 13, 10 am to 6 pm. The El Cajon Holiday Lights event is only on December 6, so on the second weekend use Sunday for the sunrise hike and a long brunch, or flip the plan: go to the festival on Sunday, when the feast is at noon and the gates close at 6 pm, and spend Saturday at Santee Lakes and Lake Jennings.

Getting around and packing

  • Everything is a short drive: El Monte County Park is roughly 10 miles from Santee Trolley Square and about 12 miles from downtown El Cajon by road.
  • Transit won’t get you to the gate: the MTS bus route in Lakeside doesn’t list El Monte Road, so plan to drive.
  • Layers: early-December highs in El Cajon average near 70°F, but nights drop into the low 40s.
  • A small flashlight for the walk back to the car or shuttle after dark on Saturday.
  • Cash, water, and tickets saved offline before you reach the park.

Questions

Is the Yuletide Medieval Festival in Santee or El Cajon?

Neither. It’s in Lakeside, at El Monte County Park, 15805 El Monte Road, a short drive from both. It’s roughly 10 miles by road from Santee Trolley Square and about 12 miles from downtown El Cajon.

Can I do the festival and El Cajon’s Holiday Lights on the same day?

Only on Sunday, December 6, 2026, and only by leaving the festival early. Holiday Lights runs 3 to 7 pm with the tree lighting at 6:30 pm, and the festival is open 10 am to 6 pm that Sunday. Splitting them across Saturday and Sunday, as in this plan, is more relaxed.

What time is sunset in East County in early December?

About 4:41 pm in Santee on December 5 and 6, 2026, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, and about 4:42 pm on December 12. Saturday festival hours run well past dark.

How much does Santee Lakes cost?

The preserve lists day-use parking at $4 per vehicle on weekdays, $7 on weekends and holidays, and $10 on special-event or peak-holiday days. Hours and fees can change, so check the preserve’s site before you go.
