Julian in December means cold, clear days around 52°F, freezing-ish nights, Country Christmas shopping and Santa visits, apple pie and hour-long gold mine tours. Snow is possible but not common this early: NOAA’s normal December snowfall is only about 0.2 inches, so treat a white Christmas as a bonus and check chain controls before you drive up.
Julian in December at a glance
Julian is a former gold rush town in the mountains of eastern San Diego County, and in December it delivers the cold-weather holiday mood the coast rarely does. Here’s what to expect:
- Weather: cool days around 52°F and nights near 38°F, according to NOAA normals.
- Snow: possible after a cold storm, but December averages only a trace; January through March are snowier.
- Holiday events: the Country Christmas season, which Visit Julian lists for November and December, kicks off with a free tree lighting on November 28, 2026.
- Food: apple pie from a long list of bakeries, plus cider and hot drinks.
- History: underground gold mine tours and a self-guided walking tour of the old town.
- Nature: Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and its peaks just to the south.
Julian Christmas 2026: Country Christmas and the tree lighting
Julian’s holiday season is branded Country Christmas, and the Julian Chamber of Commerce’s Visit Julian site lists it for November and December. The season includes a Christmas market for holiday shopping, Santa visits at Town Hall and the annual Christmas tree lighting.
The tree lighting is the one event with a published 2026 date. The San Diego Tourism Authority lists Julian’s Country Christmas Tree Lighting for Saturday, November 28, 2026, from noon to 7 pm at 2712 Washington Street, and the Julian Merchants Association calendar lists the same date. It’s free, with musical entertainment all day, craft vendor booths for holiday shopping, and Santa arriving to meet children at 6 pm before the tree is lit.
Visit Julian does not publish dates or times for Santa’s Town Hall visits or the Christmas market, so call the Chamber at 760-765-1857 before you plan a trip around them. Julian is a small town and the tree lighting draws a crowd, so arrive early and expect to walk from wherever you find parking.
Will there be snow in Julian in December?
Possibly, but don’t count on it. NOAA’s 1991-2020 climate normals for the Julian station put normal December snowfall at about 0.2 inches, even though December brings about 3.5 inches of precipitation. In other words, most December precipitation falls as rain. Normal snowfall climbs to about 1.1 inches in January, 1.9 inches in February and 3.0 inches in March, so late winter is the better bet for snow play.
When a cold storm does bring snow, the higher ground around Julian and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park usually whitens first. Watch the forecast for a cold system, then check road conditions before you go.
Snow play rules and chain controls
Snow days bring traffic, and county and state agencies have repeated the same advice for years. San Diego County has warned that private property is off limits for snow play, so watch for fences and signs; that parking is limited and enforced with citations; and that vehicles blocking roads or private property will be towed. Bring a full tank of gas, water and food in case you’re stuck in traffic for hours, and expect few public restrooms.
Caltrans can impose chain controls on mountain highways. Under Requirement 1, chains are needed on all vehicles except passenger cars and light trucks with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Under Requirement 2, chains or traction devices are required on everything except four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels, and those vehicles must still carry traction devices. Under Requirement 3, every vehicle needs chains, no exceptions.
- Check Caltrans QuickMap or call (800) 427-7623 for road conditions before leaving home.
- Carry chains that fit your tires, and know whether your car is front- or rear-wheel drive; chains go on the drive wheels.
- Pull completely off the road to the right to put chains on, and leave them on until you pass the End of Chain Control sign.
- Chain installers are not allowed to sell or rent chains, so buy them before you head up.
- In Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, dogs are not allowed on trails; State Parks allows leashed dogs on designated paved park roads.
Apple pie, Julian’s favorite souvenir
Visit Julian says apple pie may have put the town on the map, and you’ll find it almost everywhere. Bakeries listed by the Chamber include Mom’s Pie House (two locations), Julian Pie Company (on Main Street and on Highway 79), Apple Alley Bakery, Julian Cafe & Bakery and Marisol’s Pie Shop. Many visitors eat a slice in town and carry a whole pie home.
Hours vary by shop and season and aren’t listed on the Chamber’s pie page, so check with the bakery if you’re arriving late in the day or on a holiday.
Gold mine tours and town history
Julian grew out of an 1870s gold rush, and the Eagle Mining Co. lets you walk into that history. Its hour-long guided tours take you through the old hard-rock tunnels of the Eagle and High Peak mines, restored to the way they were in the 1870s. The company says it is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm and no reservation is needed. It doesn’t list holiday closures, so call 760-765-0036 if you’re visiting near Christmas.
Underground temperatures don’t care about the season, but the walk to and from the mine can be chilly in December, so bring a jacket. Back in town, the Chamber offers a self-guided historic walking tour of Julian’s old buildings.
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in winter
About 15 miles south of Julian on Highway 79, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park covers oak woodland, pine forest and meadows. California State Parks lists day use at $10 per vehicle ($9 for seniors 62 and older). The two signature hikes both start from Paso Picacho: Stonewall Peak, a 2-mile climb to 5,700 feet, and Cuyamaca Peak, 3.5 miles to 6,512 feet, with views to the desert, the coast and Lake Cuyamaca below.
In winter, start early: day-use hours run to sunset, and in December the sun sets before 5 pm. If snow has fallen, call the park at (760) 765-3020 before you go to ask about conditions.
Driving to Julian in December
Julian has two main approaches from the San Diego area, and making a loop of them is a classic day trip:
- Via Ramona: SR-67 north from Santee and Lakeside to Ramona, then SR-78 east up to Julian.
- Via Cuyamaca: I-8 east past Alpine, then SR-79 north through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to Julian.
- Both routes climb into the mountains on winding two-lane roads; allow extra time and plan to drive home in the dark, since the sun sets before 5 pm.
- Fill up and check chain controls before you leave the valley, and download an offline map in case signal drops.
Combining Julian with other December plans
The Ramona route home runs down SR-67 through Lakeside, which makes it easy to add a stop in East County. On December 5-6 and 12-13, 2026, the Yuletide Medieval Festival takes place there at El Monte County Park, about 46 road miles from downtown Julian, with jousting, a battle pageant, guild encampments and St. Nicholas. A Saturday tree-lighting trip to Julian on November 28 and a festival day the following weekend make a natural pair.
