Things to Do in East County San Diego This Winter

East County San Diego trades beaches for lakes, granite peaks and small-town history. In winter that means cool hiking weather, stocked trout lakes, holiday lightings and mountain day trips to Julian and Cuyamaca, all within reach of Lakeside, El Cajon, Santee and Alpine.

Top things to do in East County this winter

A quick list to start, with details by town below:

  • Fish for winter trout or walk the 5.15-mile loop at Lake Jennings, Lakeside.
  • Birdwatch at Lindo Lake, one of San Diego’s few natural lakes.
  • Hike the Historic Flume Trail at El Monte County Park, or tackle El Capitan County Preserve.
  • Spend a day at Santee Lakes: fishing, playgrounds, trails and around 230 bird species.
  • Catch the free Santee Holiday Lighting on Friday, November 20, 2026.
  • Visit the Alpine Historical Society museum on the last weekend of the month.
  • Drive up to Julian for gold rush history and apple pie, then hike Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.

Lakeside: lakes, flumes and granite peaks

Lakeside is East County’s outdoor hub. Lake Jennings, a drinking-water reservoir on the edge of town, is stocked with trout from around November through early April, and also holds bass, sunfish, bluegill and catfish. Its relatively flat 5.15-mile trail circles the lake, and a separate path along the old flume bench runs about 5 miles east along the ridge above El Monte Valley. The campground is open year-round.

In the middle of town, Lindo Lake County Park surrounds one of San Diego’s few natural lakes. Herons, pelicans, egrets, geese and ducks are common, and the park has 1.5 miles of ADA-friendly trails, a playground, a skate park and fitness stations. The county expects improvement work on the west basin to begin in fall 2026, so parts of the park may be affected.

Farther up El Monte Road, El Monte County Park sits beneath the rocky face of El Cajon Mountain, with big lawns, playgrounds and the Historic Flume Trail, whose interpretive panels tell the story of the wooden flume that brought mountain water toward San Diego from 1889. For a serious hike, El Capitan County Preserve offers about 11 miles of rugged ridgeline trail; the county rates it strenuous, with little shade and up to six hours round trip.

El Capitan Reservoir, run by the City of San Diego, is open for shore fishing, kayaks, canoes and float tubes, but its boat ramp is currently closed due to low water, and it is closed the first Friday of each month and on Christmas Day. Created in 1935 when El Capitan Dam was completed, the reservoir lies about 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego on the San Diego River and, when full, covers 1,562 surface acres with 22 miles of shoreline. Visitors 8 and older pay a general admission that includes a fishing permit.

Santee: Santee Lakes and a holiday lighting

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve is a 190-acre park owned and operated by Padre Dam Municipal Water District. Its seven lakes are filled with recycled water and stocked with sport fish year-round, and the park offers camping, cabins, boating, playgrounds and walking trails. Around 230 bird species have been recorded there, which makes a winter morning walk worthwhile even if you do not fish.

The City of Santee kicks off the season with its free Holiday Lighting at Santee Trolley Square on Friday, November 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m., with the tree lit at 6:15 p.m. Expect live entertainment, Santa photos and sledding. The city suggests taking the trolley, since parking nearby is limited.

Alpine: pioneer houses and local history

In Alpine, the all-volunteer Alpine Historical and Conservation Society runs a museum in its pioneer houses, open from 2 to 4 p.m. on the last weekend of each month, with private tours by phone appointment. In December 2026 the last weekend falls on December 26 and 27, an easy outing between the holidays.

Julian and Cuyamaca: a mountain day trip

Julian, about an hour east of San Diego in the Cuyamaca Mountains, grew out of an 1870s gold rush. Today you can follow a self-guided history walk using a map from Town Hall, take a gold mine tour (offered daily, according to Visit Julian), browse shops in historic buildings and, of course, sample the town’s apple pie. Wynola, three miles west, adds restaurants and antiques, and Lake Cuyamaca has boat rentals and fishing.

In winter Julian feels like the holidays in a way the coast rarely does: Visit Julian describes a nip in the air, wood smoke and the chance of snow on the surrounding peaks.

South of town, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has more than 100 miles of trails through oak woodland, pines and meadows. Popular hikes include the 2-mile climb up Stonewall Peak (5,700 feet) and the 3.5-mile route up Cuyamaca Peak (6,512 feet), with views to the desert and the coast. Day use at the picnic areas is $10 per vehicle, according to California State Parks, and dogs are not allowed on trails.

Holiday events in East County

Beyond the Santee lighting and Julian’s Country Christmas season, Lakeside hosts the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park on December 5-6 and 12-13, 2026. It recreates a holiday in England in 1420 with jousting, a battle pageant, guild encampments, St. Nicholas and Father Christmas, and it is one way to combine a holiday outing with a day in the East County hills.

Winter weather and what to pack

East County’s inland valleys are warmer by day and noticeably colder at night than the coast. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for El Cajon give a December high of about 68°F and a low of about 42°F, with about 1.8 inches of rain in the month. The mountains around Julian and Cuyamaca are colder again and can see snow during winter storms.

  • Layers: a light top for afternoon hikes and a warm jacket once the sun goes down.
  • Water and sun protection, even in winter; El Capitan Preserve has very little shade.
  • For mountain trips, check road and park conditions before you go.
  • Note that several county parks close vehicle access and restrooms on December 25.
