A December Day in Lakeside: A Sample Itinerary

Start with a morning walk at Lindo Lake County Park, spend the middle of the day at the Yuletide Medieval Festival at El Monte County Park, and plan around a sunset close to 4:40 pm.

The plan in brief

Lakeside is a small East County community with lakes, open space and the El Monte valley under the rocky face of El Cajon Mountain. A December day there works best if you put an easy outdoor stop in the morning, give the middle of the day to the Yuletide Medieval Festival, and respect the early sunset. In Lakeside, the U.S. Naval Observatory puts sunrise around 6:35 am and sunset around 4:41 pm on December 5, 2026, with civil twilight ending about 5:08 pm. Times are within a couple of minutes of that through December 13.

  • 8:30 am: a walk around Lindo Lake County Park.
  • 10 am: the festival opens at El Monte County Park.
  • Midday: jousting, the battle pageant, guild encampments and lunch.
  • 4:40 pm: sunset; on Saturdays the festival carries on after dark.
  • 6 pm Saturday: the St. Nicholas Day Feast, if you’ve booked it; the festival closes at 8 pm.
  • Sunday version: the feast is at noon and the festival closes at 6 pm.

Morning: Lindo Lake County Park

Lindo Lake County Park, at 12660 Lindo Lane, is open from sunrise to sunset and is a primary recreation center for the Lakeside community. San Diego County Parks describes 1.5 miles of ADA-friendly multi-use trails, a children’s playground, picnic areas and 17 fitness stations. The lake is split into two basins and draws waterfowl such as herons, pelicans, egrets, geese, ruddy ducks and American coots, so bring binoculars if you have them.

An hour here is plenty before the festival. It’s a calm, flat start that suits all ages and gets the wiggles out before a day of crowds.

Late morning to evening: the Yuletide Medieval Festival

The festival is held on the grass at El Monte County Park, 15805 El Monte Road. Expect knights in tournament, a daily battle pageant by the guilds reenacting the Battle of Meaux, the King’s Procession, guild encampments, minstrels and storytellers, an artisan marketplace, and St. Nicholas, Father Christmas and Krampus. The daily show schedule isn’t published, so check what’s on when you arrive.

Plan your arrival around parking. Parking is an add-on: General Shuttle & Parking ($10) parks you off-site and shuttles you in, and Fairgrounds Premium Parking ($35) is limited. The shuttle lot location and hours aren’t published yet, so check your confirmation email and allow extra time. There is no cell coverage at the park, so screenshot your tickets and directions before you leave Lindo Lake.

After dark

On Saturdays the festival stays open until 8 pm, more than three hours after sunset, and the St. Nicholas Day Feast is served at 6 pm. It gets cold quickly: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for nearby El Cajon put early-December lows around 42°F. Bring a warm jacket, hat and a small flashlight for the walk back to the shuttle.

On Sundays the festival closes at 6 pm and the feast is at noon, which makes Sunday the better pick if you want to be home early.

Other Lakeside options for a second day

  • Lake Jennings (9535 Harritt Road): day use and shore fishing 8 am to 5 pm daily; boating and fishing hours run longer on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It’s also a campground.
  • El Capitan County Preserve (13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road): 2,619 acres and about 11 miles of trails with views of three reservoirs. The county calls the main hike strenuous, taking up to 6 hours with little shade, so it’s a separate day, not a festival-morning warm-up. Open 8 am to sunset.
  • Helix Flume Trail: a short trail about a mile west of El Monte County Park, managed by the park staff, with valley views and panels on early water transportation.
  • El Monte County Park on a non-festival day: 88 acres of lawns, mature trees and the historic flume trail, open 9:30 am to sunset with $5 day-use parking.

Timing tips

  • Daylight is short: about ten hours between sunrise and sunset. Do anything scenic before 4 pm.
  • County parks close at sunset to vehicles; don’t plan a dusk hike.
  • Allow extra time on festival days for parking and the shuttle.
  • Bring cash, water, layers and printed or screenshotted tickets.
  • Check San Diego County Parks before you go for any closures or storm-recovery notices.

Questions

What time is sunset in Lakeside in early December?

Around 4:41 pm on December 5, 2026, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, with civil twilight ending a little after 5 pm. It stays within a couple of minutes of that through mid-December.

Can I hike at El Capitan Preserve and go to the festival on the same day?

It’s not a good idea. San Diego County Parks describes the main El Capitan hike as strenuous and taking up to 6 hours. Pick a short walk, such as Lindo Lake, on a festival day.

Is Saturday or Sunday better for a day trip?

Saturdays run until 8 pm, after dark, with the feast at 6 pm. Sundays close at 6 pm with the feast at noon, which suits families who want to be home earlier.
