South of El Cajon and east of La Mesa, Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego and Jamul trade city sights for an 1863 adobe museum, a big county park above Sweetwater Reservoir, open wildlife land along Highway 94 and a tribal casino resort. Here is what to do, with details from the places themselves.
The best things to do in Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego and Jamul
These three neighboring communities sit south of El Cajon and east of La Mesa, strung along Highway 94 in East County San Diego. Rancho San Diego and Jamul are unincorporated county communities with no city hall of their own, and most of the attractions here are parks, open space and small local institutions. The highlights:
- Tour the Bancroft Ranch House Museum, a National Historic Landmark adobe in Spring Valley.
- Hike, camp or fish at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park, above Sweetwater Reservoir.
- Drive up nearby Mount Helix for its stone amphitheater and views.
- Use the Rancho San Diego Library for free programs, including a December carol night.
- Hike the oak and sage country of Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area east of Jamul.
- For adults 21 and over, visit Jamul Casino Resort, owned by the Jamul Indian Village.
Bancroft Ranch House Museum, Spring Valley
The Spring Valley Historical Society calls the Bancroft Ranch House the oldest adobe in east San Diego County. Built in 1863, it is California Historical Landmark No. 626 and a National Historic Landmark, and the all-volunteer society runs it as a free museum dedicated to Spring Valley’s history.
The museum is at 9050 Memory Lane, off Bancroft Drive between Highway 94 and Kenwood Drive. Visiting hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm, and guided group tours can be arranged by calling the caretaker at (619) 469-1480. The society invites visitors to bring a picnic; alcohol is not allowed, and dogs are not allowed except service animals. The grounds lost trees and picnic tables in a storm in February, and the society is raising money for repairs, so call ahead if you plan to picnic.
Sweetwater Summit Regional Park
Just south of Spring Valley, with a Bonita address at 3218 Summit Meadow Road, Sweetwater Summit Regional Park is a large San Diego County park on a hilltop above Sweetwater Reservoir. The county lists 15 miles of trails for hikers, cyclists and riders, winding through grassland and along streams with views of the reservoir. There are 112 campsites at the top of the hill, picnic areas, an outdoor theater, a 13-station exercise course and a seasonal splash pad, and you can fish at the reservoir.
Day-use hours are 9:30 am to sunset, daily, and day-use parking is $5. People can walk in from sunrise to sunset. There is no vehicle access and no restroom access on December 25. The county recently rerouted about 1.3 miles of the Sweetwater Loop and River Trail to protect habitat, so follow posted signs.
Mount Helix, just to the north
Mount Helix rises between La Mesa and Spring Valley, and the park on its 1,370-foot summit is worth the short drive. The nonprofit Mt. Helix Park Foundation maintains its 1925 amphitheater and the 35-foot stone cross, and the park is open 5:30 am to 5:30 pm in winter. The top lot holds only 12 cars. Our things to do in La Mesa guide has more.
Rancho San Diego Library
The San Diego County Library’s Rancho San Diego branch, at 11555 Via Rancho San Diego (the mailing address says El Cajon), is a community hub for the area. It is open Monday 10 am to 6 pm, Tuesday noon to 7 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 10 am to 6 pm, and Friday and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, and is closed Sundays. Regular programs include storytimes, free play mornings for small children, teen game days and tech help.
The Spring Valley branch at 836 Kempton Street runs bilingual Spanish-English programs, including a Pajama Bilingual Storytime on Tuesday evenings, December 8 and 22, at 6 pm. It is open weekdays and closed on weekends.
Jamul Indian Village and Jamul Casino Resort
Jamul Casino Resort, at 14145 Campo Road (Highway 94), is owned and operated by the Jamul Indian Village, one of 12 federally recognized tribes that make up the Kumeyaay Nation. It was formerly Hollywood Casino and was rebranded Jamul Casino Resort in 2018, so older maps and reviews may still use the old name.
The resort is strictly 21 and over: children are not allowed on the gaming floor or in any of its restaurants, which makes it an adults-only outing. Alongside the casino floor there is a boutique hotel, a spa, a rooftop pool and several restaurants. Self-parking and valet are both free. Smoking is allowed on the gaming floor and in some lounges, with a non-smoking slot room and non-smoking restaurants.
Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area
For open country, head east of Jamul to Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area, run by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Its roughly 6,100 acres form a wildlife corridor between Otay Mountain and the Jamul Mountains, with coastal sage scrub, chaparral, oak woodlands, streamside forest and grassland between 750 and 2,100 feet. The land was part of the 1831 Rancho Jamul grant to Pio Pico and was a cattle ranch for much of the 20th century.
It is open daily from sunrise to sunset. To get there, take Highway 94 (Campo Road) about 4.5 miles past Jamul to Honey Springs Road, turn left, and look for a small dirt parking area with restrooms; a dirt trail heads north from the lot. Dogs must be under control at all times, drones need a permit and there is no fishing. Quail and dove hunting is allowed in season, so wear bright colors, and expect limited cell service.
December in Spring Valley, Rancho San Diego and Jamul
This corner of the county is quieter at Christmas than the bigger downtowns, but a few dated events are on the calendar for 2026:
- Saturday, December 5, 3 to 8 pm: Christmas on Mt. Helix, a free evening Christmas market with Santa photos and caroling, with shuttles from parking at Grossmont High School.
- Saturday, December 5: the Enchanted Village Gala, a ticketed fundraiser for Noah Homes, a Spring Valley nonprofit serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In past years Noah Homes has also run a public Enchanted Village holiday light display in mid-December; check its website for 2026 dates.
- Tuesday, December 8 and 22, 6 pm: Pajama Bilingual Storytime at the Spring Valley Library.
- Tuesday, December 15, 5:30 to 6:30 pm: Carols, Crafts and Cookies at the Rancho San Diego Library, with Christmas caroling by the Tinseltones, a kids’ winter craft and snacks while supplies last.
- Friday, December 25: no vehicle or restroom access at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.
A medieval Christmas day out
For a bigger outing, the Yuletide Medieval Festival sets up at El Monte County Park in Lakeside on December 5-6 and 12-13, 2026, with jousting, a battle pageant, guild encampments, St. Nicholas and Father Christmas. It is about 14 road miles from the Rancho San Diego Library and about 20 road miles from Spring Valley or Jamul, and children 10 and under get in free. Lakeside’s own Spirit of Christmas tree lighting is the evening of December 5.
